Running Windows 7 HP 64-bit. First some history.

During the day when I'm on and off the desktop, I put it into Sleep mode. The blue led on the start button blinks while in sleep and becomes solid when computer is woken up. At night the computer is completely shutdown, no blue led at all.

Lately, there have been times when the computer goes to sleep without the let blinking. Pressing the start button wakes the computer up, but the led doesn't always come on...but the computer is functioning fine. Also, lately I have been getting quite a few alert messages stating that there is an unrecognized USB being detected. As far as I can tell, even with this alert, all devices that are connected to the computer are functioning fine. Lastly, I did clean the inside of the computer, recently. But as far as I can tell, the computer functioned until this shutdown.

I have again opened the computer for a visual check (didn't see anything suspicious) and it did start up once while in this state. But that was it, no more starting. I don't believe that it has ever run hot as I do monitor the tepms.

My suspicion is that I may have a start button or start power system that has gone south. I won't be doing any fixing myself and will take the computer to a tech for servicing, but I would like to know what to expect from the tech. That is, if you guys can give me some clues as to what to look for in the way of diagnostics and/or a fix, then I hope i will stand less of a chance of being hosed for the repair. Or maybe, I'll just look for a new computer...which reminds me: At what price point of repair should i start thinking of a new computer? I use the computer for email and heavy browsing.

Thanks.

If I had to ballpark I would say right off the bat it sounds like something is wrong with your power supply if you're starting your system and it hangs on startup / shut down. You could try replacing the PSU with an Antec Earthwatts or Corsair CX430 and see what that does if your rig will support said power supplies.

yes,i think so,so the next thing I want to do is put in an aftermarket cooler, and an SSD.
