I recently set up my external and formatted it for Mac through the prompt given to me on installation. It worked great on the mac I installed it on, however, when I plugged it into a different Mac this only I only had read-permission. I formatted it for Mac, why isn't it working? Thanks all!

Solution
Go into Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. From there select your new external hard drive and then erase/reformat to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). That should do the trick. It is most likely formatted for Windows which Mac can read but not write to.

Hi. I also purchased the Seagate Backup Plus for my iMac and copied a selection of folders to it. I didn't want the entire iMac backup as I have a drive specifically for that via Time Machine. Anyway, after I copied folders to the new Seagate Backup Plus, I moved to my MacBook to copy files from that but it wouldn't let me.

I never had to format the drive when I initially bought it and used it on the iMac. I don't see why I would need to format it to get it working on both machines when it already works on one. There must be some option to select that I don't know about.

gbrew345, did you find an answer?

The below response from popatim says they believe it was originally formatted for PC, but the box and included tutorials say its for both. Plus it works perfectly on my iMac. Its just the second Mac it has restrictions… Help anyone???

Hi gbrew,

I ran into the same problem. The solution is to install the Seagate Dashbood tools onto your second mac, or any other mac you'd like to backup. This installation includes the Paragon NTFS driver, which tells the Mac OS how to write to the NTFS format common to Windows. Once I performed the installation, the backup plus drive allowed me to read and write to it from my second mac.
