My PC seems to run all of my games excellently on high settings. I played through Metro on all the highest seetings and didn't notice anything unpleasent such as lagging or tearing. But my equipment is not top of the line or overclocked. What type benchmarking could I do to realize the practical limitations of my system (such as software or activities)?

Hardware:
cpu: i5 3570k 3.4Gb
ram: 16 GB Ballistix sport (2x8)
MoBo: BIOSATAR TZ77A
GPU: PNY GTX 660
OS: Windows 7 (x64)

Solution
Well what resolution are you at?

A gtx660 will not max all games at 1080p.

Also, 16gb RAM is overkill for a gaming build.

Go play far cry 3 or crysis 3. You computer will not max either game.

If you want your system to craw around like a bear after winter try this:

- get circuit simulator software
- prototype frequency circuit for voltage multiplier for higher than 10Khz
- set simulation for 1 minute of work

Once this starts you should be able to NOT use your computer for next 6 hours or so.

I think you're on the money. My crappy haier TV doesn't support 1:1 so I have the res turned down a notch to compensate for overscan. This could explain why everything runs so smooth. It looks pretty good anyway.

The 16Gb was intended for work purposes not gaming.

Wanna loan me far cry? :)

while his exact solution is rediculous I was looking for something more like what yhikum suggested. Just a simple test I could use to put a hurting on my machine.

That's pretty much what these programs are made for - you get an exact score of how your system performs after a series of stress tests based on GPU and CPU performance.

Updated: I got my screen to 1:1 and switched my resolution to full 1080p. This caused minimal visual improvment (to me) and additionally caused somewhere in the range of 18 degrees hotter temperature at the CPU. Is it normal for CPU temps to jump so far with a small bump in resolution like that?
