Is there a difference between PCI Express x1 and PCI Express?

I'm new to PC building and I want to make sure I have all the correct parts.
I'm adding a wireless adapter to my rig and is "PCI Express" compatible.
My motherboard has PCI Express x1 compatibility, and I want to make sure they are compatible.

What motherboard are you getting? There are Pcie x16 slots, which are for graphics cards, and Pcie x1 slots are the small, short slots next to those. Then there are just PCI slots which are in between.
