I own a Toshiba Satellite A300D-205 and I am thinking of upgrading the CPU.

Here's the microprocessor's specifics:

http://products.amd.com/pages/NotebookCPUDetail.aspx?id=503&f1=&f2=&f3=&f4=&f5=&f6=&f7=&f8=&f9=

And here is a list of all of the AMD Turion microprocessors:

I am struggling to understand which one of the listed Dual-Core CPUs compatible with the S1 socket is the best candidate for an upgrade - maybe the AMD Turion II N550?

With great irony I answer my own question.

The AMD Turion II N550 is not a valid candidate because it runs with DDR3 memory - socket S1g4 default design - which is neither forward or backward compatible with the previous versions.
My specific CPU is an AMD Turion X2 RM-74 which runs with a DDR not compatible with DDR2 nor DDR3. This means that the "best upgrade" would be the AMD Turion X2 RM-77 which gives roughly an upgrade of 10% - maybe even less.

Considering the amount of effort required for finding one (discontinued production), buying it and then paying someone to install it, I highly discourage anyone from updating this CPU.

So for all of the Toshiba Satellite A300D owners with the same problem, not satisfied with performance, even though it is clearly not a notebook for intense work load: don't upgrade the CPU unless that 10% upgrade is absolutely essential.
