Hello all! I have a Gateway 510S H (manufactured in 2003). It has 1GB RAM, Windows XP Professional. I was given a video card, GeForce 7800 GS OC Overclocked, and it installed onto the motherboard fine, but when I turn the PC on, the fan comes on (the one on the video card too, so I know it has power going to it), but the monitor says no signal, and then it goes in standby. There are two ports where I can plug the monitor in, in the video card itself, or further up by the USB ports and other ports. I tried both, but still no signal. Whats going on? Thanks!

P.S. The old video card that was in it was NVIDIA G-Force2MX 200, if that helps any.

First things first, if you can track down a latest BIOS update, put back in the old video card and do a BIOS update, it could be a compatibility issue, because the 7800 is much newer than the Geforce 2 MX.

Since you already have the card plugged in, I'm going to suppose you have an AGP edition of that 7800. Since, the Geforce 2 MX 200 is an AGP card and Nvidia transitioned to PCi-E during the 7000 series. That being said, I'm AGP isn't universally compatible with previous revisions. Your newer 7800 is likely a low-voltage AGP device, while the older one (2MX 200) was likely a higher voltage AGP device. If your slot is AGP 4x or earlier, don't count on it supporting the later low-voltage AGP standard.

See this page to identify what voltages over AGP your card supports:

http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/agpcompatibility.html

Also, make sure you hook up the extra power connector at the end of the card's edge, if your 7800 needs additional power (and I suspect it would).

Other than that, I would suggest that the 7800 may be dead. The 7600/7800/8600/8800 generation of NV cards had some issues that lend to short life spans.

My power supply is 450W, and I unplugged all drives but the HDD and video card, thinking maybe it was a power problem. And yes, it is the AGP version. I will check to make sure I have the latest BIOS update.

Can you confirm your board supports AGP 8x (for the low voltage requirement) ? All the images I have seen with a quick Googling on the web (based on slots on the AGP connector) indicates the 7800 is an AGP 8x-4x card with only support for 1.5 or lower voltages.

If your board came with a Intel 865 (any flavour) it would have AGP 8x, but if it is Intel 845, then it is only AGP 4x. In either case, the card SHOULD work, but more likely for the Intel 845 chipset, you'll need a BIOS update if Gateway provided one.

The 2 slots meant it was a 3.3V (high voltage AGP) device. Your new one with only 1 slot means it can only operate on 1.5V (for 4x) or 0.8V (for 8x).

I would look into that BIOS update, if possible. Make sure you have your monitor cable plugged directly into the video card, not the motherboard's IO panel (that is for the Intel Extreme Graphics -> slow onboard graphics).

I just noticed that you may have missed the addendum I added to my first response. But essentially, the most obvious part is check to make sure you have a 4 pin MOLEX power connector from the power supply plugged into the video card at the back of the video card. The 7800 GS requires external power.

Well....I can't update the BIOS. I got the latest one from INTEL, but it says it was unsuccessful. I even tried some older updates, but I still couldn't get it to work. My motherboard model number is INTEL D865GLC. And yes, I do have the 4 pin MOLEX connected to it, when its not plugged in, it makes a loud beeping sound. Not sure where to go from here....

Those BIOS updates you got sounds like they are from Intel's website for the generic Intel branded motherboards. Your computer has a motherboard that is (likely) made by Intel for Gateway. The BIOS checksum and signatures are different (and the hardware may not be all the same on the board), so you can't flash a generic Intel BIOS for that same board onto your board. You need Gateway's version of that BIOS update.

Go to Gateway's website and track down the support section of your machine and download the latest BIOS update for your model. That should work flawlessly (in the right OS).

Yup, tried that link. Still says its unsuccessful. I tried the update for the model number of the motherboard, and the update for the model of the computer. Both don't work. Do you think it could be because I have the CD/DVD drive unplugged?

The CD/DVD drive shouldn't matter... What message are you receiving from the computer when you can't update the BIOS ? Is it telling you that the BIOS update isn't for your computer or incompatible ?

This is what it says: "The Express BIOS Update was unsuccessful. Your system's BIOS has not been updated. Restart the application and use the View Readme button for troubleshooting your BIOS update."

In the link I provided, there were several BIOS updates. Gateway isn't clear about which update is for what machine and what the differences between those different BIOS updates are. Can you try the 2 remaining ones on that page under BIOS and Firmware sections as:

"Midway and Midway Plus Motherboard BIOS Gateway BF86510A.15A.0066.P07 526.8 KB 07/27/2010"

AND

"Firmware Gateway 1.72 522.3 KB 09/21/2010"

Nope, tried those and it still doesn't work. I'm thinking that is the issue, the BIOS has never been updated, so it doesn't recognize the new card. Now if I can get the BIOS updated, it should recognize the new card, right? I just gotta figure out how to get it updated now.

Hmm, you might need to dig up some older versions of the BIOS and upgrade to an interim version then the final version. Sometimes that is required for BIOS updates when you jump to the latest version.

Gateway support seems very poor, I can't find any good descriptions of the BIOS or the motherboard.
