I installed the nvidia gt 640 on my dell.. and it works fine.. but requires the intel hd graphics on startup ... How do I make it immediately use the gt 640?

Solution

If that doesn't work/not available, this may be "by design". What I mean is, there was a specific set of designs that during '2D' mode (looking at your desktop, surfning a webpage, using Word) you would use the lower power generic card. When you loaded a game '3D mode would kick in, and then switch to the Graphics Card for gaming.

Check your MoBo's documentation or look up the maker then the board for the PDF, and double check if you still have a issue.

boot the pci express on the bios rather than the integrated graphics

yes.. tell your BIOS to use the PCIe lane in which your GPU is installed rather than the intel integrated graphics.. just go to the bios and look for the settings, it's easy

I checked any my bios does not have this setting.. and it is in legacy mode.. do I need to update bios?

You can check with the Mobo maker for updates to it (if any). But normally a Mobo with built in video has a option "Use onboard video first" or some such statements. If there is NO options at all for that you would have to go to the Mobo maker and look up in their forums, FAQ and / or READ THE MANUAL (pdf) for that option.

You 'added' this to a "dell", how OLD is this Dell computer?
