Ok so first things first - click this link; http://i.imgur.com/pNl3BPI.png

A motherboard, with a circle around a pci-e 3.0 slot, now why is that second slot circled you may ask!? well.....

I just randomly looked in my pc case and noticed my gtx 780 is in that slot (the second one down) and i thought.. Hmmm why on earth did i do that, lol.

Now im paranoid. Is it in anyway inefficient having it in this second pci-e slot rather than its brother above him?

And if I were to move my gpu into the above slot and start my pc, what would happen? would I have to re-install drivers and stuff?

I'm curious on this one guys lol, replies would be appreciated

There should be no difference in the 2 slots, you should still try to move it into the first one though. There should be no divers or anything involved by simply switching slots. My guess is whoever put it there thought it wouldnt fit. Note though on the case there might be slots you have break out, which would mean there would be an empty hole in the case. Some just screw in.

You won't have to reinstall drivers as you're not changing any hardware. Moving it up one slot, I believe, will put it into a PCIe 3.0 slot as opposed to 2.0. This will likely utilize the card more and maybe even produce better results. Not to mention that the first slot is closer to the NB and (If I'm not absolutely cukoo) make the card run faster because of it. Simply less distance for the information to travel across the mobo. I believe this is the idea behind the new APU processors... could be way off base with that, though.

It shouldn't make a difference which slot the card's in. They are both PCIe 3.0 with 16 lanes available. Seating it in the other slot shouldn't change anything. Shouldn't even have to reinstall drivers, as far as I know.

I will happily move slots but I want to be 100% sure it won't well, simply put. Eff anything up.

Rightio fellas haha, I'm trusting all your expertise and I'm going to give it a switcharoo now, well in the morning in fact because to be quite honest with it being 3:00 am and being awake for over 20 hours i am bound to make some stupid mistake, who knows it could end up in the pci-e 1.0, lol.

I had a similar issue with sleep, got back from E3 and bought a new psu on the way home because my old one died a few days before, all excited to get it back up since I built it in april, it wouldnt start. Guess who never plugged the cpu cord in at 12:30...
