I have a home build rig which is now 4 years old. Everything was working fine when suddenly one day my kid was watching a video and the monitor went blank with an error message no input signal check video cable. I tried switching to another monitor with no display. I also tried switching between DVI and HDMI cables with no luck. At this point I thought my video o/p from the mb was not working (the mb has built in video o/p). So I went ahead and bought a cheap video card and hooked it all up with same error message on the monitor and no image. I am not sure what to do next. How can I figure out whether my mb or any other parts on the m/b is not working. I was having a strange kind of noise from the pc before this display problem started. Here is my config:

asus m4a78t-e mb, amd phenom II AM3 3.4Ghz cpu, OCZ 700W power supply, 2gx2 patriot 240pin DDR3 SDRAM, 1TB seagate HD. The new graphics card that I bought is EVGA Geforce 8400 GS 1GB DDR3 card.

Any help please on how do I go about fixing this issue.

Solution
Put a bootable media on ODD/USB see if you can get a display. PSU could be the reason, to test it short the green wire with any black wire with a metal wire and see if the fan of PSU is spinning or not. If the fan is spinning than it is almost perfect.

BTW did you properly install the CPU with thermal paste and HSF ? Don't you get any post or any beeps or MB splash screen ? Do any fans spinning inside the case or led's light up ?
You need to go into your bios of the motherboard and set the default
graphics card output device as Pci-e slot.

(Geforce 8400 GS 1GB DDR3 card.)

Save the settings in the bios and exit.
Plug the monitor cable into the back of the Pci-e card.

Here is the online manual for the board in PDF format.
It explains how to change the default display card.
Chapter 3, section 3-22.

I guess I haven't made myself clear. I don't get any display from the pc whatsoever from power on from both the MB video o/p or the new graphics card o/p so I can't go into the BIOS and do the changes that you are suggesting. I guess the new card wouldn't display if I don't change the settings in the BIOS but then I can't access the BIOS either since the MB video o/p is not working. Any other thoughts.

Hi, try to takeout your RAM sticks and reseat it properly. Check out the PSU if it's running/spinning. Try another VGA cable. And lastly try to start the PC without any RAM sticks and hear for any beeps sound from MB. If you hear any beep sound than probably your MB is ok, otherwise the MB is likely faulty. BTW have any MB speakers installed.

No I don't have any MB speakers installed. I will try your suggestions and see what happens. I have already tried swapping the cables from DVI to HDMI and back with no luck.

Hi lonewolf7,

I tried booting up the pc after taking out the two memory sticks from the mb and didn't hear any clicking or beep sound, does that mean the mb is dead. if that's the case then the mb didn't last for even 4yrs. A follow on question would be if I end up buying a new AMD mb can i remove the cpu from the old mb and install it on the new one. any ideas.

I checked your MB over net, that MB got a VGA port(Blue 15 pin port),
and I told you to test with a VGA cable not with DVI or HDMI cable, did you do that. Please check with a new VGA cable. It's cheap to try.Yes MB's can fail without any notice, no matter if it's old or new. Another thing if there are no MB speakers how did you manage to check the beep sound. And to answer your question:

Yes, of course you can do that without any problem as long as the MB for your CPU is compatible. Best way to find out compatible MB for CPU is to go to the CPU manufacturers website and look for compatible MB, all the manufacturers have this list. OR, search Google.

But keep in mind you may have to Repair-Install Windows(OS). The drivers and controllers probably won't match. It' a good idea to back up your valuable data prior to Repair-Install.

Before buying a new MB try to check it with a local tech to be absolutely sure. Good luck.

I tried with the VGA cable as well with no luck. I still get the no output check your video cable error on the monitor. As for the sound I thought I would hear it if i boot the system with memory sticks removed but i didn't and drew the conclusion that the mb is dead not realizing that i need the mb speaker. and no i dont have the mb speaker to plug in. any other ideas.

Did you tried the VGA cable to onboard video port (MB's VGA Port), or with the GPU ? In other words try this ( Monitor's VGA port ----> MB's VGA port) with VGA cable.
If that fails to than right now there is no way to check the MB. Try a local tech if you wish. The last resort will be a new and compatible MB.

I plugged in the cpu on the new mb and still the same problem. no display on the monitor. any other ideas. i am planning to order a cpu otherwise pretty shortly. would any of this problems indicate a psu going bad. i haven't had any startup, hangups or other issues that might show psu as the culprit.

I think my psu is working fine. I have an antec case with 5 fans in it and they all turn on when i turn on the pc. i also see a green led light up on my asus mb when i plug in the psu on the mb and turn it on. the psu fan also kicks in. the cpu was installed on the mb 4 yrs back and it came with a pre applied paste so i didn't had to do it. i just tried putting the cpu on the new mb without the paste to see if i am getting any op. since i didn't get any op i quickly turned it off. as far as the psu is concerned i dont think its a problem since i wasn't having any failures like the computer hanging up or rebooting abruptly related to a psu breaking down earlier.

issue FIXED....dead psu what a mess....the psu would turn on with the fan spinning and would also kick in the power to the 4 fans in the case as well as the fan on the cpu but would not put in enough power to start the BIOS and so won't display anything on the monitor. I think the 24 plug pin could have been dead....well finally back to work :D
