intel core 2 Quad & intel core i7 gaming performance

so, i'm planning on building a gaming pc.
what i want is a pc that gives the most FPS possible.

i'm torn between two options that are,

cpu: Intel Core i5 4670K
Main-Board: MSI Z87-G45
Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX760 2GB
PSU: Corsair GS 800W v2
MEM: Kingston 2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz HyperX
SSD: Intel 80GB SSD 335 Series Sata III 2.5 Inch
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 7200RPM, 64MB

OR

cpu: intel core 2 Quad q9550
Main-Board: asus p5kr
Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX780 OC 3GB
MEM: Kingston 2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz HyperX
PSU: Corsair GS 800W v2
SSD: Intel 80GB SSD 335 Series Sata III 2.5 Inch
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 7200RPM, 64MB

I can get the second system for atleast 500$ less than the first

so the question is, does an i5 4670K coupled with a GTX760 perform better or worse than a Q9550 coupled with a GTX780 (gaming performance only) ?

considering that I will be overclocking the two systems to the max.

    get the i5 and a 770 (neither 760 nor 780) for the best bang-for-the-buck
  2. The Q9550 won't meet many games' CPU demands today, and will meet fewer tomorrow. It'll also severely bottleneck the GTX 780 with no real room to upgrade the CPU later to compensate. The 760's performance with the i5 will still trounce the 9550's performance with a 780.
  3. Go for what jin said. If you can't, go for the first system. The Core 2 Quad will bottleneck the hell out of the 780. That and it's pretty damn old as well.

what i don't get is that if the quad core is fast 4.0Ghz, why would it perform wrse than an i5 clocked 4.0ghz, since games depend on the gpu.
  5. The old quad core will be bottleneck because of the Front Side Bus (FSB).
Newer Intel CPU have integrated memory controller built in that greatly improve performance and latency.
It's not worth it to spend money on an old machine.
  6. ok then i'll get the first system with a GTX770 then in the future i might add another GTX770. thanks everyone.
