I'm getting into PC gaming and have gotten a rather large array if I should get a Steam account. Some people say it's great convenient and the sales they have are awesome while others say it's a pain and it wont let them customize there there keys exc... I don't know much but what I do know is if I can't customize what key I want to do things for RPGs, MMO, or FPS games that's a deal breaker.

I just want your opinion on the sight, if it's worth it or not, and here's just a little about me so maybe you can give me some advice. I'm going to do a lot of gaming on my PC so going to the store to buy a physical copy seams like an inconvenience when there's an option to get it instantly. Now that I think of it, can you download it state from the creators web sight?

Everything helps, thanks in advance and pleas don't start a "war" over other peoples opinions on this, everyone is initialed to there own.

Edit: By customizing the keys I mean like the hot keys, I don't know what it's called, when you decide that you want the "F" key to open inventory instead of the "G" key.

Maybe that's because that's likely not a problem with steam at all, I've never heard of anyone complaining about something like that from a steam game specifically over a stand alone version.

There are certain limitations to steam...

I have no idea what you mean by "customize what key I want". Could you clarify that please? I have never had an issue with anything like that, you can generally do what you want with your Steam game library (mods, etc), unless it's a multiplayer cheat and they (Steam) generally frowns on that.

On a more general note about Steam, I personally avoided Steam for the longest time, but once I got it, saw the sales, and realized the convenience of having almost everything in one place, I've never looked back.

By customizing the keys I mean like what key does what in the game ex. for most games the "G" key is for gear but I prefer the "F" key and someone told me when they tried to do that the whole game froze and ran into a bunch of problems so they're forced to stay on the default ones. This might be because his computer or the game is messed up but it's all the games he's gotten from Steam, when he reported it to steam he said they didn't help at all then complained about how bad there help hotline is.

There are certain limitations to steam that you need to understand. For example, if you buy a few games and have people in the house that want to play different ones at the same time it's a real pain. Most of the time it's a great and smooth running system run by a fairly trusted company.

There are a few pay to win style MMO games and the like on there, and the account itself is free too. So you could install it, grab some pay2win game and have steam install it and try it out, at least that way you can try how steam works before you actually buy anything through it.

Steam is probably one of the best tools for the PC gamer. It has its up and downs, but it's definitely worth it. Since it's free to create an account and browse through all the games and special sales you should create an account and see for yourself. There are no deals like Steam's deals anywhere. And the fact that several free-to-play games are bound to Steam is quite nice (wether you have to pay for microtransactions later or not). It's a great hub for all your games, even those you have on your computer but you didn't get them from Steam. You could just add shortucts to the Steam Library and have them all in one place (that's what I do).

Nevertheless, it's got some issues. Customer support isn't the best thing in the world and take a long while to respond to any enquiry you might have. From time to time you also might encounter a certain game which has a specific issue with Steam and you need to wait for a fix (I count 3 or 4 times happening in my 2-3 years on Steam so no big deal). I myself sometimes get an issue where all my added shortcuts from games that aren't from Steam go away after closing the application (fixed already).

And what you said about customizing keys: it's got nothing to do with Steam. Someone had an issue with a game and the game crashed when trying to change key-mappings...well it's weird but not Steam's fault.

Steam is absolutely recommendable, mainly for two things: Spectacular Sales and great game-hub. And since the Summer Sales are about to begin, you should totally create your account and see for yourself!! I've being saving for the last month :D

As others stated, binding keys is part of the game, not steam. Not needing a physical CD/DVD is great. Just be aware that if you lose your steam password or your account gets hijacked, you may have problems getting your games back. Use a strong password and store the password somewhere safe. I also recommend that you use "steam guard" to protect your account from hijacking.

Its a great service, Valve have definitely done something right with it. Basically, Steam is the gold standard for online game distribution, other things like EA's Origin, uPlay and Games for Windows Live are just horrible in comparison.
It is essentially what console gamers have been fearing though, in that its a service which locks games to an account that doesn't allow you to trade them, Steam is a form of DRM in a way. But again, they'v done it so well and unobtrusively and filled it with positive incentives that you don't even care. If you set up your account right, you can suddenly lose internet (without going into Offline mode beforehand) for up to 300 days and still be able to play your games.

Than all the sales, its pretty ridiculous.

I remember a quote from one Valve employee, might have been Eric Wolpaw or Gaben, don't know which. He was explaining how everyone said don't even try and get Steam into Russia since everyone pirates there. They just said that they will offer a better service than the pirates, and now the Russian market is one of the strongest markets for them in the European region.

I generally prefer having physical copies of things, but I honestly cannot remember the last time I purchased a game that was not a download, and 99% of those are on Steam. For me the convenience of not having to hunt the disk far outweighs the very occasional outage. Also, I have probably around a score of unplayed games and I'll probably drop a couple hundred on the summer sale this year just because the prices are so great.
