Should I Get A GTX 770 Or A GTX 780?

Solution
GTX770 unless you like wasting money :) You're looking at a very unimpressive performance gain for the considerable extra expense of the GTX780. I think nVIDIA's sole purpose in launching the GTX Titan was to make the GTX780 look like a bargain, when it's infact insanely overpriced.

I don't really expect how you want us to assess this. You haven't told us your resolution, your system, what you plan to play, etc etc etc.

The 770 is basically a glorified 680 being both cheaper and faster. It matches the 7970 Ghz, and beats it in some games. The 780 is maybe around 15-25% faster. The 770 is a better performance/dollar, but it really depends on how you use it. The 3GB of vRam on the 780 might be of more value to you. Its definitely a good card, and you'll be happy with either.

But before I would say to go for either, I would like to know what games you play, your system overall (to check if it won't bottleneck, and whether the power supply is enough), and your screen resolution.

The 7970 was launched at $550 I believe, and no one really cared about that price. If the OP feels he is getting value, its fine. The 780 is pretty expensive to manufacture as well, the cooler is pretty darn expensive.

LOL the cooler is not that expensive. Expensive by cooler standards but I strongly doubt there's more than $30-40 added to the cost, and probably less. Keep in mind that the few GTX770s that feature the same cooler cost nowhere near as much as a GTX780. And it's 15% on average:

15% for $250. That will turn 30fps into 34fps. For $250. Are you just arguing this for the hell of it?

I plan on maxing out games like Battlefield 3, Crysis 3, and Far Cry 3 at 1080p.

I just upgraded from a 670 to a 780 and the real world performance difference is huge if you want to max out games like Metro last light, Bioshock infinite, and max payne 3, with fluid gameplay. The extra memory and faster architecture warrants the difference in price if you play demanding games. I recommend the Gtx 780 will to spend the money because the 770 is not that much faster that the 670 and has the same amount of memory unless you go with the 4gb model that will be significantly more expensive.

If you are planning to play demanding games with a 1440p you will need a gtx 780, Titan or a SLI configuration unless you want to turn down the settings. Also a SLI configuration will require a costly power supply and case upgrades in many cases and have more compatibly problems.

GTX 780 or Titan is the way it's meant to be played however spending $650+ on a video card is not for everybody.

Old thread - I think OP has probably made the purchase now. I'm playing Max Payne 3 maxed at 1080p at the mo on a GTX670 FTW and it's flawlessly smooth. Crysis 3 I'd agree the more you can throw at the better. And at 1440p you'd still want to turn down settings in Crysis 3 even with a GTX780. Not that OP is gonna be using 1440p anyway.
