Hello tom's hardware I purchased a ssd drive and installed it problem is I need a product key its for windows 8 no disc. I took the old hard which is a Toshiba hard drive and tried to boot it with a external dock on another computer why wont it boot from that?

Solution

Install the drive normally into the computer, get the product key (which you should have had on the case when you bought 8, or can get from the PC vendor if it came with it), then stick the other drive back.

You can't just yank a drive out and try to boot frrm it as an external drive, it's like taking out a car engine, sitting on it and wondering why it's not going anywhere. Windows is very tricky to get to boot of an external drive, and I don't think Mircrosoft allows it...
