Here is the build I want to buy:

Video Card: Sapphire 7770 1GB
CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHZ Six-Core
Motherboard: MSI G43 970
Ram: 1x8GB DDR3 1600 Ram
HDD: 1TB 7200
Disc Media: DVD/CD 24x

I get $40 off the motherboard with purchase of that CPU at Microcenter. Some games I would like to play on medium to high (1400x900 and 1280x1024): Skyrim, Planetside 2, Battlefield 3, Dead Island, and Xcom: Enemy Unknown. Any advice will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Is the video card the problem with the computer being able to play only on medium settings? How well would an HD 7850 work in contrast to the 7770?

This thread should be moved to systems, but no biggie.

A 7770 is plenty for 1280x1024. At that resolution, the system you've put together will play all of the games you listed at high settings. It will play almost all games in existence at high settings as well. The only suggestion I'd make is to use 2x4gb memory sticks to take advantage of dual channel. Other than that, looks good!

If you want to move to 1920x1080, then yes, a 7850 or higher would be necessary.

afaik, a mod would have to move it so don't sweat it.
