Will you be using a GPU? that is the main power user in a computer.

Just go with 650w or more because PSUs these days arent that expensive, and a 450w might struggle at times with a demanding gpu.
I recommend a modular corsair or seasonic brand (Modular means you only plug in the cables you need, less mess)

It stands for graphics processing unit. It's the graphics/video card

GPU is the Graphics Processing Unit. It is the Display adapter of your system. Whatever you see on the monitor is because of this GPU.
Most of the motherboards have inbuilt GPU on them but to play high definition games, the onboard GPU is not sufficient. Here the non-onboard GPU or Graphics Card comes in the picture. Costlier the Graphics Card is, better its performance would be and more Power it would need.

You could go for a good quality power supply with 600+W like Seasonic S12II 620W or Corsair VX650 V2 and your PC would be ready for almost anything you can throw at it.

This unit is decent. The cx line from corsair aren't the best but they are better than some off-brand for sure. I would get the xfx550. It is a re-branded Seasonic and will be VERY high quality. It will run any single GPU without problems.

I would suggest you get the 2GB version of 650Ti or it would be even better to go for HD 7850.

If you are getting a 650ti do not worry about a 2gb card. because it isn't a super powerful card the memory bandwidth runs out before the actual Vram does. 2gb cards less powerful than a 7850 don't perform any better than 1gb cards. If you are getting a 650ti, just get a 1gb card.

You should change the CPU to an fx-6300 and get an am3+ motherboard to go with it.

This will save money and allow you to get a better GPU. It will perform much better in games.

Hey james just so you know, a gpu and graphic card is different.

GPU- the actual chip that is manufactured by NVIDIA, or AMD, it is where all the calculations happen. (ex. hd 7970 or gtx 650 ti)

Graphics card - The gpu is then taken and modified by some companies and they do things such as adding a fan or some special features.
(ex Asus GeForce GTX 650 Ti, or EVGA gtx 770 with ACX cooler)

It would help if you put down your budget because we can help select the best configuration for you :)
And also what games are you planning on running, and at what setting?

EDIT:: James since you arent using this for gaming then you might as well use integrated graphics from intel (comes with the cpu)

sprry i should have made it clear i am not using it for gamin but instead to run mac os smoothly and then possibly in perhaps 3 years i made use it for gaming but the idea is then that i can upgrade it and my budget is around £550 and certainly no more than £600 (excluding a monitor)

oh right i was sure that would be suitable though as to run mac os i heard you need a graphics card as that what macs have, so i am not looking for an expensive one but a reasonable one for my budget

You are absolutely right about 2 GB may not get utilized. Let me tell you about my experience. I have 8800 GTS 320 MB card. GTA 4 just checks that my VRAM is less than 512 MB and limits me from increasing the details, even though my card is capable of rendering more details.
With PS4 and XBOX One having 8 GB memory, future PC games may check the VRAM of the GPU and may not even allow the game to be installed.
If budget allows, I would strongly suggest HD 7850 as the consoles would have equivalent GPU.
