My Laptop is capable of 1920x1080p, but it only displays 1366x768 by stock settings?

Awhile back I connected my laptop to my 48 inch full 1920x1080p HDTV, and when I did it also set my laptop screen to 1920x1080p. I was tinkering with the display and resolution settings and I set it to extend the display to the TV, like most people do.

When I did this, that was when it changed the solution on my laptop from 1366x768 to 1920x1080p. So is there anyway I can keep it at 1920x1080 like when connected to the TV or am I understanding what happened wrong?

Laptop is an Asus N61JQ-X1.

It sounds like you may have been mistaken, most likely the laptop stayed at 1366x768 even when the tv was connected. Check the manufacturers website for your exact laptop and see what it lists the max resolution as. Most likely the laptops screen can do 1366x768 but can drive an external 1080p display (like your tv).
