hi, it looks like it could be time to start upgrading my parts.

looking at the cpu hierarchy chart, am I right in thinking that the intel -4770K is the current daddy and for amd the FX-8350 is the current don. is this correct?

which one is best. my pc is occasional use, ms office, web browsing, porn and games.

I have access to some mixed and varied ddr3 2gig sticks from work. I have 4no 2gig. 1333mhz for free, so I can use those

which way should I go on the cpu and mobo to suit? I will use my current crossfired cards until I can afford to address those, I will simply plug in my sata 1tb drives so no change there either. I will keep the case, so atx recommends please

current specs as sig.

thanks,
chops

ok, so value for money upgrade I should look at the amd route then I guess?

for how much longer will this cpu be top of the tree, is there anything new on the horizon.

also whats a good mobo to pair it with?

Hey, i would go with i5-3570k, because it is good enough even for high end gamming, plus if you feel for more power, you can always overclock it :). mobo.. ASRock Z77 Extreme3 would be a great deal :)

The 8350 benefits from the Piledriver microarchitecture, which is the most recent architecture, introduced in 2012. The 8350 model was introduced in October of last year. There is a new microarchitecture coming in the near future, but it is questionable whether or not you should wait; Piledriver fixed a lot of the problems people had with its predecessor, Bulldozer, and usually a new microarchitecture represents a <10% increase in performance. It is much more likely that something else in your system will be the bottleneck anyway, so it is not super likely that waiting would benefit you--unless it helps you sleep better at night, knowing you have the absolute newest piece of tech, which is certainly not an invalid reason ;^)

Like the i5-3570k, the 8350 is overclockable (it is unlocked). The motherboard choice depends on what you plan to do with it. You need a socket AM3+ motherboard (which is rumored to also be supported by the next microarchitecture) and nothing fancier than a 970 chipset. Any number higher than 970 is intended for enhancing multi-gpu setups.

If you're keeping your current case, which looks like it's a mid-tower, then I would get this ATX motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157262

You could probably go cheaper, but I'm not all that experienced with AMD motherboards, and I operate by a (admittedly ignorant) rule that it is unwise to overclock on a sub $100 board.

its a tough one, it's always about finding the difference between performance/futureproofing and money lol.

I think that if I can get a good cpu and mobo now, I can live with my current parts and upgrade those as/when funds become available.

I could I suppose sell my 2 gpu cards and go card 1st in my list of up[grades but then i'm bottlenecked by my cpu/ram mobo I guess. I think I've just talked myself back into upgrading mobo and cpu 1st lol.

so if the FX-8320 is the best value for money, cpu at the moment (DISCUSS), what would be a good moboard to go with it.

can you get a moboard that takes 2 cpus? could I put 1 in to start and add another later?
