Temp spiking in my graphic card.

I have a Radeon HD 6870 that currently is spiking between 50C - 90C. Unaware of what could it be (Dust, thermal paste or else)

I took it to a computer repair shop. They told me that the fan or heatsink was too tight and that they wouldnt be responsible for any damage done, obviously i declined and i brought it back with me.

Im planning in changing my whole rig in the upcoming months but im wondering how long will my GPU last at this rate. Is the temp too high? or is there an option to ¨fix¨the issue.

I have already cleaned my GPU and it hasnt been that long since i purchased (around 5 months) for the thermal paste to be failing.

Edit.

I have been wondering if i should buy a cooling fan. Would it make a difference? Do i need a special case for it?

Solution
What CPU do you have, and what type of CPU Cooler do you have? It might be a little too big and not needed and you could get a smaller CPU cooler for the time being. Which would let more air flow in and it would be better for the entire system, if you want you could possibly look into the a new gpu, depending on the other parts of course, I suggest the 760 for its new features.

My cpu is a intel pentium dual core 3.0 ghz. The cooler is quite small and theres enough room for the air to flow. Eitherway i am planning in changing everything, including the case, but it will take some time.

Not overclocked and the first few months it ranged from 40C- to probably 60C.

Right now is idle and running in a 46C temp.

It´s alright, i lost hope in ¨fixing¨or finding an answer to the cause. Im more worried about how long will it last with spiking temps from 50 to 90C.

That would be the solution if from the start the temp would be like this. But like i said, the first few months the temps were normal.

I understand where you are coming from but think about it, from the moment you put it in, it was doing damage to it, now it is getting worse, I would upgrade soon too, but this may not be the culprit, I don't know.

I have found the problem. Somehow the micro processor is fine and the reason the temp is spiking is because of the fan. The fan doesn´t work at all. I took the case lid out to see the graphic card working and even thought it gave image the fan was completetly shut down.

Stupidly i tried to force it to spin and a couple of times it worked but just for a second. Does this have a fix or there´s no way to make it work again?

Nevermind. It seems the model fan is faulty. I have researched a bit and there has been other cases where the same thing happened. I will see if the warranty is still applicable and return it.

Thanks for the help guys.
