hey guys, i recently bought a cx750m PSU and connected everything up. unfortunately, it didn't boot up. now, i'm new to modular PSUs, so i'm HOPING TO GOD i missed a connection. but if i did connect everything, i'm afraid that something is shorted out and dead. is there a way to start a PSU without all the components to see if the PSU is just bad or something? i had to buy a new PSU to replace one that blew out.

ok i tested it; the PSU works. what else should i do. i tried re-plugging in my MOBO and it won't start up. should i extract all of my components out of the mobo to test to see if it's my MOBO?

If your previous PSU blew up and damaged the CPU VRMs on your motherboard you're not going to get anywhere in your testing until you replace the motherboard.

What was the brand and model of the dead PSU? If it's improperly designed or it lacked the appropriate protection circuits then there is very likely damage to some/many/all components that were attached to it.

it was a thermaltake tr2 500w. i just unplugged everything except the 24pin main connector and booted it up, and the PSU fan started for a split second then shut off. is that a sign of something?

There have been at least four different versions of the Thermaltake TR2 500 Watt model PSU. To me that indicates that there is a problem with that model. If it was any good Thermaltake wouldn't have been replacing them that often.

Do you have the CPU and CPU cooler installed on the motherboard with the CPU power connector and the main ATX (20+4)-pin main motherboard power connector plugged in?

the PSU was over-loaded because i had two r7770s and an i5-3570k overclocked. 500w wasn't enough for the two, so it just turned off and wouldn't turn back on. but yes, i do have the cpu and the cpu cooler installed with the main power connector connected. but when you say the cpu power connector, you're talking about the outlet next to the cpu socket on the very top of the motherboard?

yes i do have the cpu power connector connected.

If you look at Newegg's customer feedback on the Thermaltake TR2 500W you will see an abnormal percentage of the feedback reporting that the PSU blew up when it wasn't even under a heavy load.

Does the CPU cooler fan turn/twitch at all when you press the power switch connected to the motherboard?

Is there an LED indicator on the motherboard that indicates that the motherboard is receiving +5V standby power when you turn on the PSU's power switch?

i wish. the motherboard won't even turn on. like i said, the PSU fan turned on for a SPLIT SECOND before it turned off again (it won't spin again). i took everything out of the motherboard except for one fan to add some sort of load to the PSU, and the fan wouldn't spin. i really think the motherboard is just dead. should i try baking it in the oven?
