I think this is it:

This Hp has been sitting unused at my moms house (she sold the monitor and thought she didn't have a computer anymore). I am going to upgrade the RAM from 512x2 to 1gbx4 (any card suggestions)?. Other than that I don't know what else to cost effectively revive this pc?

My uses will be mostly writing grants, email, itunes, general browsing and a little hulu. I may use it to play star craft a bit but resolution isn't a huge deal. I want to know what I should do to bring this Hp up to date as much as possible minimizing bottlenecks.

better you build brand new PC

Thank you for the recommendation on what to do as well as a build option. I booted this bad boy up last night and wow blazing speed...reminds me of times past :). I think everyone should use an old computer now and again to put what we have back in perspective.

I think I am going to wipe (or something) the HD and install a dual OS (Ubuntu and Windows) but first I have to learn how to do it. Ubuntu for everyday performance boost and windows for running the things that need windows. I found an old linksy wireless adapter but apparently no one uses 802.11g these days...heh. I love finding random components.

This thing will work for basic use, a make do for now. Especially after putting an OS that uses low cpu like ubuntu. I think I will go to our local repair shops and see if they have any old components they are looking to discard. Spending more than $40 on this thing would be a waste, no ram increase for this Hp. I agree after turning it on that starting with a fresh build would be the best option but for now making this guy putt along is more cost effective and kinda fun.
