Tomb Raider Legend Lag?

Hi everyone!

I have just installed TRL on my PC for a bit of a nostalgia moment. (Haven't played the game since I ditched my single core 2gb laptop! XD) Anyway, I noticed a setting called 'Next generation content', and naturally I thought, 'Ooh, better graphics!'. I was right, it is better graphics, I assume mean to be used with the next generation of GPU, aka, now. However, upon selecting this I have frame rates ranging between 30 to well over 200. Before selecting this it was more like 100-400. The lower maximum i can deal with, but why am I only averaging 30 FPS? I haven't exactly got a sketchy PC, considering its such an old game as well.

Please can anyone suggest any fixes? Thanks!

My system specs can be found by hovering over my avatar.

If you keep your eyes open, all three of the Crystal Dynamics versions of Tomb Raider go on sale from time to time on Steam for under $5.

The Next Generation Content was actually dropped as a feature for TR: Anniversary and Underworld. It's just built-in and working properly in later revisions of the game engine.

I actually suspect, apart from the random glitches here and there with the original feature, your SLI setup or maybe even NVIDIA's adaptive VSYNC may be influencing the game engine when Next Generation Content is enabled. I don't look at it as anything being wrong with your rig, just that some of your features may be incompatible with the way that game is coded. I would try the game without SLI if it's not too much hassle...
Was playing "Legend" the other day myself, and remember the issues with "Next Generation Content" from when it was first released.

The Next Generation Content was always buggy in the first release of the "Crystal Engine," and depending on the level, it would actually cause the game to crash completely. It was later fixed for Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Underworld, but my understanding is that there is no fix for the crashes in Legend. When and if it happens, turn off the Next Generation Content and continue past that level, and then you can turn it back on.

My recommendation would be to actually disable SLI for the purposes of TR:L, as even a single 670 is massive overkill for the Next Gen Content, and see if that clears up the inconsistent frame rates you're experiencing. :)

Thanks for your reply!

I thought it would be a bug/glitch of some sort and not a problem with my own hardware! =P To be honest,my main concern is the fact that my frame rate drops below 30 at times. As you say, a single 670 is massivly overkill for such an old game, so why cant I even keep it at 60? Ah well, if what you say is true about the crashes I just wont use next gen content at all. Anniversary supports it properly though you say? Looks like I'll be pruchasing myself a copy of that soon...=)

Thanks again for your help!

The Next Gen Content really does improve the visuals, when it's working, and even an old GTX 260 I ran it on had more than enough horsepower to run it at full speed with the Next Gen Content enabled.

They have free demos of all three Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider games on Steam, if you're interested in comparing performance of the newer versions of the Crystal Engine.
