Would it really improve my performance that much that I should sacrifice my cd drive?

That power supply is junk( it made the lemon list http://www.johnnylucky.org/power-supplies/psu-lemon-list.html). With an HD7770 and a low budget I would recommend the CX430v2 it's $40 but currently has a $20 mail in rebate.

If you could raise it another $50 or $100 you could get some much better quality components like a PSU upgrade and a 7850.
Just set a little cash on the side for a month or so and you will be much happier with your build. Heck maybe even something gets dropped in price.
