I've only had this problem just recently in which my WiFi connection would only work if my hardwired laptop is turned on, but once turned off the WiFi no longer would work. The strange thing is that all the lights on my router and modem are still on and on my wireless desktop, iPod Touch, and phone the name of my WiFi (SSID) show up but when I try to connect to the WiFi I cannot connect. Also the WiFi does sometimes work if I unplug and re-plug the routers power but only for 1-5 minutes. I've never had this problem before, in fact my WiFi was working perfectly about 2 days ago. The computer I'm typing this on is the hardwired laptop.

(My laptop is currently hardwired because it's wireless card no longer works and we don't move it much.)
Info:

  • ■ Router: N600 Dual Band NETGEAR Model WNDR3400v2 (bought within past 12mo.)
    ■ Modem: Zoom Cable Modem 3.0 1079 Series (bought within past 12mo.)
    ■ iPod Touch is the newest 5th generation and my phone is a Galaxy Nexus
    ■ Wireless desktop: Acer Predator G3610
    Intel i5-2300 CPU @2.80GHz
    x64-based PC
    Windows 7
NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 graphics card
    Current wireless adapter card: 802.11n
    ■ Hardwired laptop: Toshiba Satellite L655D
    AMD V120 Processor
    Windows 7
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 graphics

Tried:

  • ■ Unplugging and re-plugging both router and modem
    ■ cmd > ipconfig/release > ipconfig/renew
    ■ Called my service provider Comcast and they didn't do anything
    ■ Resetted my router and modem
    ■ Unplugged ethernet cable from router to modem and re-plugged
    ■ Went to NETGEAR genie and tried to configure from there
    ■ I.E. I did just about everything I know

Solution

if you know how to tracert i would try to see where your desktop is routing to when you can use the internet on the desktop otherwise like you said try replacing the router

did you try wiring a different computer to the router to see if you could connect to the internet with it?

I've only got one laptop (unfortunately the wireless card does not work) and my wireless desktop is upstairs and quite honestly I do not want to move it downstairs to where the router is and set it up

I just found my wireless USB receiver and plugged it into my laptop, with the hardwired cable plugged out, and I was unable to connect to my WiFi on the laptop and neither was my mobile devices, but all the lights on my router and modem were green and lit. In this process I lost my wired in connection so I had to configure my router again.

I unplugged my hardwired connection on my laptop and still had WiFi connectivity on my iPod Touch but it only lasted for about 10 minutes or so then the WiFi once again did not work. I then re-plugged my hardwire and whala for some reason I have internet and WiFi once again.

Someone please help this is not suppose to happen. I do not want to have my laptop running all day and all night just to sustain a WiFi connection.

Should I just buy a new router and see if that's the problem?
