High usage of ram

My desktop computer s1300 imedia packard bell has very high ram usage for the amount of operations it is doing it has up to 68% usage with only two internet tabs open in google chrome and sometimes i can here the fans whirring loudly and im worried my computer my catch fire it dose get very hot sometimes the fans are also very loud make a whirring sound.

Look at this i have two tabs and it using 67%?

Also would it be worth upgrading the ram instead of buying a new computer?

If buying a new computer is within your budget right now then that would not be a bad idea at all. That platform is approaching 4 years old.

The memory controller on that processor natively supports dual channel DDR3-1333 SDRAM. How much it will support depends on the motherboard. A quick google shows that the motherboard has two DIMM slots, one for each channel. Since you have 4GiB installed right now, I'm going to assume that there...

Assuming you haven't changed or upgraded your computer at all...

You have 4GiB of system memory installed.

You also have a 64 bit operating system, which by virtue of using 64 bit linear addresses, has a larger memory footprint. Windows 7 is also a bit more demanding than Windows 8, and will easily consume somewhere between 1.5GiB and 2GiB on its own.

Google Chrome can also chew up half a gigabyte easily.

So, in a worst case scenario, Windows 7 and Chrome will consume about 2 + 0.5 = 2.5GiB out of your 4 GiB.

There's probably also some background programs that you're running which may also be contributing to this.

Thanks for your quick reply. Two things quickly just to clear up some confusion.

A quick google shows that the motherboard has two DIMM slots, one for each channel. Since you have 4GiB installed right now, I'm going to assume that there is one 2GiB stick in each slot. Maximum support for unbuffered DDR3 is 8GiB/slot but 8GiB DIMMs can get a bit expensive.

I would recommend a 2x4GiB set as a reasonable upgrade if you don't feel like buying a brand new computer right now. There are lots of enthusiast sets with fancy heat spreaders and tweaked timings, but these will do nothing for you. A good OEM set from Kingston or Wintec will work great and cost far less. Here's a good one that's very affordable.
