AMD Phenom II x4 965 Overclocking problem

Hello, I am overclocking my 965, and am having a strange problem. I was able to get to 3.8ghz on 1.42v, which seems a bit high. The really strange part is that whenever I try to restart my computer from Windows, it won't post. If I do a hard boot and turn the system completely off and then back on, it posts and boots into windows just fine. So, I went into the BIOS and adjust the voltage upward until I could restart from Windows, and 1.46v is where I ended up. That seems really high for 3.8ghz. Temps are good and prime95 yielded no errors, but that just seems off. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on here? Thanks for the help.

It's your motherboard.XD would not approve of it.
I wouldn't either.That mobo has a weak VRM design for overclocking;If you push it,it will blow up! :eek:
When it blows up..it can take out your CPU/PSU as well.
I wouldn't give it more than 1.4v and see what clocks you can get with that.
and start looking for a new Motherboard;Biostar or Asus is best for AMD.

it could just be that you drew the short straw with your 965

with my 955 i can change the multiplier and get to 3.7ghz without needing to even change the voltage but it will instantly crash at 3.8 without an increase in voltage.

it is purely dependent on the processor.

Have you tried installing another system to see if rebooting would be fine at same speed?

Description of problem reads like a problem with power circuit, or maybe not enough power for processor to start up. Also, the reason you would need high voltage on CPU is because motherboard voltage regulators cannot maintain same voltage at high current, hence actual voltage drops when processor is working fully. Quality motherboards come with better voltage regulators which either allow you to specify voltage drop (yes, regulate it) or guarantee small voltage drop at high current.

Normally, 965 would not need drastic voltage increase for moderate overclock of 3.8 GHz if motherboard is able to supply it without problem. Lower quality motherboards would cause voltage to drop under heavy load.

You might also have luck with better power supply, since500W might not be enough for this system you're running. Corsair brand has quality power supplies, however at high premiums due to popularity. There are better alternatives though.

Thanks for the response. No I haven't tried rebooting from another system. 500 watts may be cutting it close, I'll have to try and pick up one with a higher wattage and see what happens. My motherboard isn't exactly top notch, so that could definitely be part of it.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I guess the motherboard isn't the best. Something I've noticed: I set the voltage and multiplier to auto, and under full load at 3.4ghz the darn thing ups the voltage to 1.416v! THAT is not good.
