How Much RAM Does the Q6600 Support

My Q6600 on an Asus P5E board which I only replaced yesterday cuold handle 8 gig of DDR3 RAM.

Not sure if that was a chipset limitation or not though

I'm using DDR2 RAM. Does that make a difference.
