Hi all

I am looking at buying a server motherboard for a virtualisation platform. My intentions is to try not to spend lots of money here since I do not know how much I need to use of this platform

Here is what I need:
-dual processor
-minimum 32G of memory
-as many as possible expansion slots PCI slots

This is going to be a little bit tricky for me to formulate it correct, I am not a server or a hardware guy, but I will do my best to tell you what I believe that I need.
My intention is to configure a VMWare platform where to test virtual network appliances. In that sense the more network cards the system can take, the better. I will use these network cards to connect with a real lab and another older VMWAre server that I have.

I could probably use vlan tagging but there is situations when this doesn't work.
I could also use Virtualbox instead of VMWare.

My intention is to add components to the system as per my needs.
For the beginning I will be OK with one processor (multicore) but probably later I will need to add a second one
Same situation for memory, probably 32G will be enough but as I will be testing more and more complex configs I might need to add more

These are the critical needs that this MB has to satisfy. All the other things can be basic.

I came across this MB which is a little too expensive for me but the scalability is amazing

Since this is going to be lab I do not expect the CPUs to go very high but I don;t think that I will be able to circumvent the RAM needs for the network appliances that I will be testing.

This MB can take 64 GB UDIMM or 256GB RDIMM DDR3 800/1066/1333MHz .

Any recommendations for something similar but with a lower price ?

thank
PF

this is where AMD shines. With their high number of physical cores on a CPU, go with AMD. If you were gaming, i'd say Intel, but AMD will be better than an Intel at the same price, and it'll save you lots.
