Installed new RTL8191 wireless NIC. It worked for about 30 min, but then could not be enabled after installing Win updates. Fn-F8 key has no effect. Used Win-x key combo to bring up Mobility Center, but button to enable wifi is greyed out. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling driver. Even deleted driver (and files), powered down, removed wifi card, powered up w/o wifi, powered down, reinstalled wifi to get clean scan for new driver install. Driver reports hardware is okay, but am unable to turn on wifi. Old wifi board demonstrated same behavior. Can't tell whether unit is frying wifi cards or if there is some software glitch that is disabling hardware (seems more likely). BIOS does not have any entries for wifi. Have uninstalled Win updates that occurred prior to failure. No change in symptoms. Looking for suggestions.

The good news is the problem has been fixed. The unusual aspect is that the problem had nothing to do with the wifi board, and the solution came by accident while attempting to fix another lesser problem. The laptop had been completely disassembled to fix a broken bezel. In the process of dis-assembly, I had problems with the keyboard connector. I eventually noticed while debugging the wifi issue that the digit '1' key at the top of the keyboard, and the digit '8' key on the number keypad did not work, but all other keys seemed to be okay. While I was waiting on help with the wifi problem, I decided to double check the keyboard connector. It apparently was not correctly seated. When I reassembled things, suddenly the FnF8 combo turned on wifi. What a surprise and relief. It was a long and weird path, but I'm a happier camper now.
