Hi All - So I'm stumped... I upgraded my system back in December with an i7 3770 cpu, ASUS P8Z77-V LK mobo, and 16GB of G.SKILL Ripjaws Series DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800). I also had an EVGA GTX 550 Ti Fermi 1GB card and an OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w PSU. Everything worked fine until about a month ago. I went to turn on my pc and got nothing. Fans would spin up but nothing else. I sent my mobo back to ASUS thinking it was a faulty board. Got it back, no such luck.

So I went to my local Microcenter and grabbed a new power supply, still nothing. Went and grabbed a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4 motherboard, still nothing. Finally went and got a new CPU (exact same as the one I had). Still nothing. I've taken it all apart and reseated everything multiple times. Even tried another case. Tried the memory 4 at a time, 2 at a time, 1 at a time, trying different combinations of sticks together.

So at the end of the day, I have to similar build, both that do the same thing. I push the power button, the fans spin up for about 12 seconds, then shuts down and reboots again...I've let it go, as I know the ASUS had a feature that auto detects the RAM (MemOK!) but still no dice...

Any suggestions??

Have you done a reset of the bios on both motherboards.
And made sure the jumper on each board are in the correct place for normal operation
If the jumper is left on the two pins to reset the bios it will stop the board from posting.

Have you double checked the 24 pin Atx block is fitted correctly.
And the extra 8 pin 12v cpu feed is connected to the board.
If the eight pin is not connected you will get what you describe about the fans spinning up then a shut down after a few seconds.

Sounds like you have a part shorting out both mb and CPU. I would try bread boarding the new mb and CPU. No gpu no keyboard or mouse and one dimm and see if the pc turns on. One issue if you had a bad CPU or gpu and moved it from one mb to the other you could fried both parts. I would also pick up a post it card it help you see where the mbs are not posting.

Great job Tman! So simple even I could understand it. So after it passes & still acts up it's a windows problem.
Question? Is using a motherboard for target practice considered sound "troubleshooting" or a waste of ammunition? :pt1cable:
