Poor download speed over mains. "Fine" through wireless.

Hi there.

I've been using internet through mains for a while and it's been great until recently. My download speed has dropped from what should be >1mb/s down to around 80kb/s. This is coupled with my ping to Teamspeak and game servers shooting to 1500ms when they should only be 20 to 50ms. It isn't the IPS throttling as I can get a decent download speed through wireless; sadly, I don't get enough signal in my room to use the wireless on a regular basis, I get one or two bars and frequent disconnections.

The network is a tad odd. There are up to twelve people in my house at one time and it's a huge terraced house (student digs). We have the main router in the basement as it was the only place it could be connection to the (Virgin) fibre optic cable. That's connected to my mains adapter which feeds into two PCs, mine and another which isn't switched on during the day. It's also connected to a wireless router halfway up the house which most tennants get their wifi from.

I'm using x64 Windows 7; my mains adapters are TP-Link 200mbps; my wireless adapter is a Belkin FD4050; I have Virgin fibre optic (supposedly 100mbps, most I've gotten is 7.) I've checked the cables and plug sockets.

Thanks in advance.

Yours is a common issue running your network over your power. In general it works very well or it works very badly with very few people in between. Most times it is the wire pathing in the house which you can do nothing about. In your case since it changed what you need to do is see if you can find something new that was plugged into the house. It happens the most when it is close to the bridge units but even being on the same circuit breaker can cause a issue. Things that have a motor are the worst offenders for messing up these devices.

Not a lot you can do. If you can run the offending device on a extension cord it sometimes helps. Your other option is to find a outlet that it works well in and put in a AP and use...

I've re - paired the adapters several times to no effect. Getting a decent wireless card will be my last resort as money is tight. I'd much rather find out what has gone wrong.

Thanks.
