**Even though there are replies this thread isn't solved yet!**

I found a nice and colourful mobo on ebay and a nice CPU and want it to work.

Will it work?

Solution
Yes sir.

Although, if possible, an Athlon II X4 (quad-core) would be better (The 270 is an X2 - dual-core).

Obviously, this depends on what you intend to use the PC for as to whether or not you'll need a quad-core.

It is very cheap indeed!

I used to have one myself, then I upgraded to an X4 640.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that it will run Minecraft absolutely fine - as long as you pair it with a GPU (doesn't need to be an expensive one).

However, it often used to struggle with newer games such as Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite etc, hence my upgrade to the X4.

Without a GPU will it run on short and not fancy with Optifine?
Also, will Corsair 1333mhz RAM work?

I don't know, I'm afraid. I would assume that it'll run on minimum settings with optifine, but I can't guarantee this.

Without a GPU, you won't be able to play any other games at all. I'm not exactly sure what you meant by "light gaming", but Minecraft will be the start and end of your gaming without a GPU at your disposal.

And yes, 1333mhz RAM will work - that's the highest speed supported by the motherboard and the CPU, without overclocking.

So would a 512mb 555mhz GPU be okay or do I need something better? Like a 1gb 555mhz.

Any 512mb GPU
Minecraft, GTA, some light horror games
Video rendering in 720p or less.

--edit--
Maximum for a GPU would be £25 for 512mb and £35 for 1gb

I'm afraid not. That card won't be able to play GTA. Not sure about "light horror games" though - depends which "light horror games" you're referring to.

Also, which GTA? GTA IV or V?

GTA San Andreas - My current PC (2.4ghz Athlon X2, 2GB RAM DDR2, ALiveNF6G-VSTA, No GPU) can run it fine at 50FPS, and it can run Minecraft at around 40 on short+not fancy.
So if I got those new things would it be an improvement or should I just get a 1GB GPU for my current computer?

Ahh, San Andreas.

In my opinion, it would be better to just buy a new GPU - you won't see a significant improvement moving from a 2.4ghz X2 to a 3.4ghz X2. Of course, there will be an improvement, but a new GPU would be much more beneficial.

What's your maximum budget for an upgrade, if you don't buy that new X2 and motherboard?

Also, may I ask what power supply you have? I'll need to know the wattage and manufacturer. The model name would also be handy.

Well the PSU is a 500w OEM one so it has no brand. My friend (who sold it to me with my awesome case) said he ran a Bulldozer and a 1gb GPU on it and it worked fine.
My maximum budget for an upgrade would be £40 but for a new PC would be £110 (Excluding case, which I already have) because if I build a new PC I could sell this motherboard and CPU.

you don't have many options with a budget that tight.

Additionally, I anticipate that selling the old X2 and motherboard will be difficult, as there is likely to be very little demand for them. If you do sell them, you won't get much for them.

If I could find a 1gb GPU that runs over 800mhz for £50 or less I would get it.

How much improvement would I get if I got the new motherboard, RAM and CPU and used the onboard graphics on the highest shared memory and OC'd to 40/50mhz higher?

A GPU such as the one you've described isn't worth buying, excuse my crudeness.

Allow me to suggest an alternative...

Get an AMD APU, such as the A4 4000 - http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/AMD+%28Richland%29+A4-4000+3.00GHz+%283.20GHz+Turbo%29+Socket+FM2+Dual-Core+Processor+?productId=55471&source=skinflint

It's only £30, but has a built-in GPU, which will perform better than a cheap GPU, such as the one you plan on purchasing.

To accompany this, you'll need an FM2 socket motherboard, and some new DDR3 RAM.

You say your max budget is £110, am I correct? I could easily find you an FM2 motherboard and some RAM for that A4 4000, and it would be far better than an X2 270.

Here you go.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD A4-5300 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor (£36.64 @ Scan.co.uk)
Motherboard: Biostar Hi-Fi A85S3 Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard (£45.12 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: Corsair XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£24.13 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £105.89

This gives you a new motherboard, 4gb DDR3 RAM, a faster CPU and a built-in GPU which performs better than cheap graphics cards that you were considering earlier.

This is a much better upgrade route, I assure you.

Here's the mobo I really want: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ASROCK-M3A785GXH-128M-785G-Socket-AM3-VGA-HDMI-Motherboard-/181159358215?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopMotherboards_CPUs_CA&hash=item2a2df06f07
RAM: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Corsair-CM322048-1333C9DHX-DDR3-RAM-4GB-Kit-2x2GB-/281131519864?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN&hash=item4174be8f78
APU: The one you stated

Thank you for suggesting that APU, I'll get that instead of a CPU and GPU.

That motherboard will not work with an APU. Moreover, it is a fairly poor motherboard, offering few features and a very dated chipset - it is definitely not worth £35 - especially since it's used. The motherboard I've provided for you is brand new with a good, modern chipset and a good range of features.

That RAM is alright, but the RAM I chose for you is better.

It's up to you at the end of the day, but you'll be getting a lot more for your money if you go with the list I provided.

Why won't it work with an APU? It's got 3 PCI-E slots and supports 1600mhz DDR3 RAM so it's not that old. Plus it was $100 new (Newegg's price) when it came out.
The RAM you suggested isn't much of an improvement for me, I don't really need more than 1333mhz - the RAM I have now is only 800mhz and it's fine.

It isn't the correct socket for an APU.

That motherboard is AM3 socket - APUs use FM2 socket.

Additionally, for APUs, you need to use the fastest RAM possible for the inbuilt GPU - the faster the RAM, the better graphics it can produce.

Also, that motherboard does not natively support 1600mhz RAM - you need to overclock the RAM to get to 1600mhz - it only supports 1333mhz RAM natively.

The fact that it lacks native support for 1600mhz RAM is a sign that it's "old", and it's AM3, which is old by default. AM3+ is the latest platform for AMD's CPUs. Buying an AM3 motherboard now isn't worth it, as it is obselete.

You seem like the kind of person who is hard to persuade, so I'll leave you to decide what you want to do - it's entirely your choice at the end of the day.

Good luck, and enjoy.
