How's it going? This is my first build, and after messing around with a friends linux Ubuntu desktop, I'm pushing towards that right now. And since Dota2 announced its going to steam on linux, it pushed me even more away from windows.

Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.: August

Budget Range: $500 after rebates

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming (on linux so i'm limited to steam) and Internet use

Parts I have: I have a keyboard and mouse, I'm going to use my tv for the time being as my monitor

Do you need to buy OS: Ubuntu!

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Cheapest I guess. maybe something with a military discount if it exists lol.

Location: Georgia

Overclocking: Maybe

Why Are You Upgrading: I have a crappy laptop and have been out of the gaming loop for a while. Getting back into gaming and need a good computer anyway.

Thank you guys so much for your help!!

I adjusted 06yfz's build a bit to squeeze in a stronger GPU while being a bit cheaper.

give lubuntu a try its lighter weight and even faster than ubuntu. not much experience with gaming on linux but it will work. i know nvidia has linux drivers on their site and ati does as well.

any preference on brand preferably intel or amd? nvidia or ati?

Ill look into Lubuntu. thanks.

I'd push towards intel but I have only had amd for previous gaming, so I want to try something else. But whatever gives me the better build I prefer.

any decent processor on linux flys haha ill see what i can build. any preference on case size? mid tower? matx case?

The RAM is more expensive in my build, your likely fine to go with his suggestion of the Kingston Red. However if you ever need to move the kit over to an Intel machine, the fact it runs 1.65v could be an issue so I went for that kit which runs at 1.5v. Also the fact its low profile added to the cost by about $5, which helps if you ever install an aftermarket heatsink.

Thank you guys so much. manofchalks is probably what i'm going to go with but with Kingston red. I'm probably never going to move over to an intel machine. really fast responses, I appreciate it!
