Solution
You are mixing sticks which is never a good idea, if you can provide mobo, CPU and the models of the sticks might be able to make adjustments to get them to work

how do i know which motherboard i have(yes i am a computer noob)

It should say somewhere on the motherboard. Some googling may be required to find out exactly but most say on the board.

If the system is not a refurbished one or if you are sure that you haven't changed the motherboard since the purchase. Then I don't think you need to worry about the motherboard model, they will have the default OEM motherboards. If the above is not the case then you can do a scan using CPU-Z and check the mainboard tab. (Link provided at the end)

@bgunner: With OEM systems like Dell there isn't much room for users to adjust settings in the BIOS or in the other words they have limited access comparing to normal motherboards, you can give it a shot and see if you are lucky.

What is the specifications of the new memory you are trying to install? Check the memory label or the invoice and match the memory specification with the ones listed in this link (click on link). It should look like PC2-5300U or PC2-5300E. Make sure that your memory module doesn't carry any other letter except "U" (PC2-xxxx"U")

If the memory specifications are of a match then let me know the size of the memory you are installing and the amount of memory. Optiplex 745 has 4 variants - Desktop / Mini-Tower (MT) / Small Form Factor (SFF) / Ultra-SFF. Desktop, Mini Tower and SFF models support 8GB with 4 slots (2GB being the max per slot) while Ultra-SFF supports upto 4GB with 2 slots (2 being the max per slot). So make sure you are not crossing any of these limits.

Troubleshooting:
# Update your BIOS with the old memory.
# Remove all the installed memory. Install one new module (keep the other slots empty) and see if boots. Repeat it with other new modules (if you have more than one).
# If all the new memory modules work individually then install the new memory together (only if you have more than one module).

Let me know how it turns out, keep us posted. Good luck!!

Download CPU-Z here!! (Click on CPU-Z)

@Legohouse I am aware of the limited bios of OEM but Most at least give you the option of setting the timings. Voltage is a hit or miss along with speed selection. But thanks for the info. Some of the Dell boards you can still find a QVL list for so I was hoping he had one that did.
