Hey guys so I am attempting a bread board build with just one stick of ram, my i5 cpu and the cpu fan just to test if my motherboard is working properly. My question is as follows: Does the cpu fan need to be completely installed? the back plate the screws and everything just to test my board or can i just set it on top and plug it in to test the board?

Solution
You can technically do that, it wont be a good idea though. If you have any components running you want all the fans that are supposed to be used for them installed. So in this case you would want the heatsink and fan mounted on the cpu, plugged into the board with the thermal paste on too. Even with a short test the cpu can get cooked fast. Also if you set the fan on and take it off it ruins the thermal paste leading to poor cooling later.
