I'm looking into a fresh build containing a GTX 770, however, I am stuck between these two cards. The reasoning towards the ASUS version is that it comes with a backplate. The reasoning towards the MSI version is that it 100% matches my Z87-G45 motherboard. While the ASUS is red and black, the MSI comes with the badge and stripes. I would go the EVGA route, however I don't feel gold would go to well (I'm being picky here). Is the backplate even worth it? Thanks in advance!

Mm. Backplate. The 680 backplate from EVGA fits on the GTX 770 from Gigabyte, as it uses the 680 PCB. If you can find it, that is.

Honestly, as long as the PCB is not blue, and if it is black, the backplate isn't really necessary. My card has a black PCB and doesn't have a backplate and looks fantastic.

Have you looked at the Gigabyte OC version. That looks pretty good with a good OC too. I have the same motherboard and was thinking about the MSI version too but I have no idea what difference it will make with its VGA boost for matching MSI mobo and MSI gfx card.

Also what do you really need a backplate for? If it was needed they would all come with one.

Well, the backplate supposedly supports the PCB and prevents some warping caused by the cooler.
