Modem/router questions / concerns

Right now I have a 2 in 1 modem/router set up. My internet speeds fluctuate quite a bit no matter the time of day/night. I was wondering if my set up netgear cg3000d is causing this.

Is it worth it to go 2 in 1 modem/cable or just to get two separate devises.

Also is the 2 in 1 sacrificing my hard connection. My main PC is directly plugged into my modem/router. Could that be causing speed drops as well?

One last thing, if you guys have any recommendations for modem/router or a 2 in 1 that would be awesome. I do a lot of gaming and uploading.

Okay first off consider the Router your Front Door, if your computer, plus each phone, each laptop and anything else all race to go in and out of the door at the sametime, they all get clogged up in the door way (your spikes). It doesn't matter that your wired, that won't make you faster then the wireless devices which are all sharing the Internet with your wired computer. By Default Windows systems at 3-4AM look for patches and updates from Microsoft (Just had 18 last night). So having the other computers on can cause that too, but realistically that is also the time when maintence is done by systems (like...
What is your Internet Connection Speed your paying for on your bill? I am guessing this is Cable ISP, have you tried unplugging the power on the equipment for a few minutes then powering it back up? Could be a simple reboot might be needed? Have you checked with your provider to make sure your line is okay (see that squirrel, he keeps running along your line and you keep dropping speed! maybe he is chewing on it)? Etc. Etc. Basically if you have a computer hardlined and you running speed checks on the connection and the performance isn't what your paid for call your Cable company

I have a 50Mbps upload 2Mbps but I get spikes every so often to my ms/ping/latency or what have you. I'll go from lets say 50ms up to 200+. I'm guessing it's an error with my ISP but I'd rather ask for your thoughts and opinions.
 
That is very dependent on many things. First if your gaming wirelessly to the router, are there others on this router or are you the sole user? Second could be the other processes on your computer as much as a virus suddenly trying to spread from your machine; have you scanned for Malware and Viruses (two seperate scans)? Third check your Taskman and show all Users, when you see the drop in speeds do you also see other applications suddenly surge (maybe your webbrowser or such in the background). Lastly you should be aware your MAX (like a speed limit sign) is 50Mbps , not a garuntee of speed all the time. On Cable the 'road' like a highway comes to your neighborhood, then splits to each customer. If everyone gets on at the same time, your going to slow down and down and get more lags, because everyone is on at the same time (or everyone going to/from work on the highway causes traffic).

I meant to say my average is 50Mbps + or - maybe 10 on really busy or off days. I'm directly connected to my router with my main PC no wireless. I do have wireless devises on the router such as other laptops and phones. Computer is clear of viruses and I haven't seen any spikes in usage.

That's why I was asking if the modem/router combo could cause those errors if it's not a quality one or if it's just my ISP causing trouble. The spikes happen all the time. Peak times and at 3-4 in the morning as well.

The router maybe not be the best device, granted, but I don't believe it is the single cause. You have alot of devices all being used, and that does have a impact at times. If your gaming and Bobby on his laptop in the kitchen looks up the Youtube receipe for Fondu in the kitchen your going to take a hit on your game. The best bet would be to enable QoS (Quality of Service) on each computer, then in the Router, and setup the table on what has priority. So for WoW sessions would be priority 1 on ports 13982-14000 but Youtube videos would be a 3. You might want to let everyone know, as this will effect everyone else.
