Hi All, I am looking to purchase a new system but have read a lot about cpus and graphics cards and them not always being compatible. As this is a 'build' rather than boxed system, I'm hoping to get some feedback about (a) the compatability of the cpu and graphics card and (b) anything factors beyond cpu/graphics card/memory/power supply..that might be crucial to keepings fps high while gaming (raiding in wow, gw2, rift, tera, swtor, etc).

Potential Specs are as follows:

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.00 GHz Eight-Core AM3+ CPU 8MB L2 Cache & Turbo Core Technology [+90]

HDD: 1TB SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 32MB Cache 7200RPM HDD (Single Drive)

MEMORY: 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3/1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (Corsair or Major Brand)

MOTHERBOARD: * [CrossFireX/SLI] GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX Socket AM3+ ATX Mainboard w/ Ultra Durable™ 3, Dual Bios, On/Off USB Charge & 7.1 HD Audio, GbLAN, 4 Gen2 PCIe X16, 2 PCIe X1 & 1 PCI [+64]

VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB 16X PCIe 3.0 Video Card [+33] (Major Brand Powered by NVIDIA)

POWERSUPPLY: 750 Watts - Thermaltake SMART Series SP-750PCBUS 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply [+27]

Any help and and/or info would be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch in advance =)

Hi Jinay,

I'm paying just over 1300, though I'm in Canada and electronics are more here to begin with. But other options for hte psu included Corsair, Certified Power and EVGA if any of those makers are better. Also while I don't need that much power for the system, I was told too that if you have really high usage time wise that you should have more power than you need 'cause the psu will need to run at what you need it...pretty much all the time. In this case probably around probably 16-18 hours out of any given 24... The lowest one I can even...

Straight forward and to the point. And yay, good to know. Though if you don't mind my asking..how do you know..ie on what basis do you say that? Would help in future if I have a bit better understanding of how to figure that out. xD

And, thank you, for taking the time to reply =)

Yeah maybe a Corsair 600 Watt PSU is suitable for you. But the reason why I know it works is because all the parts are compatible with each other. Processor and MB are same sockets and GPU is fairly good and motherboard supports SLI and crossfire with a PCIe x16 for you

The lowest one I can even choose without getting a warning is 450 I think, guessing for min requirements for the graphics card.

@Uploader, thanks for explaining some
@ Jinay, seems there's consensus on the psu, so I'll indeed swap it out, and thank you as well.

Do either of you know though if there's any truth to needing more power if you're running longer? Though 600 is also a good bit more than the min I need, so likely it's good either way.

Thanks again for the feedback, much appreciate =)

Its better to have extra power than lacking power. Its never good to be on the dot, a little more nutella on the sandwich never hurts you.

And no if you're running your computer for long hours you don't need more power. The only time you need more power is if you're adding components that need more power. Your computer sucks In more energy when its on load, but a Corsair CX600W is plenty of power with extra if you want to SLI

Ok according to http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html the eight-core actually a bit better than the i5-4670, though the gtx 770 is no doubt hugely better than the 650ti. Also you went all the way up to 850 with the psu..that the min for the 770 or..? Also, OCable Intel? Not sure what that is to be honest. And, I'm guessing with part picker, I'd need to put it together myself, something I'm not sure I can do. I mean sub in and out a graphics card or swap in some new memory sure, but build the pc from scratch..that's another story. Too, in the build I put together there's sound proofing, silent fans etc that contribute to the cost somewhat..so not entirely without merit that it's costing a bit more.
So I guess the questions are
1. if I'm downgrading the cpu, to upgrade the psu, is that worth it?
2. why the hefty power supply
3. What is OCable Intel
4. Does partspicker actually put it together as well
5. Guessing the OS, which on the other build is included (Win 7 or Win 8), isn't included at partspicker either?

And, as ever, thanks for taking the time with this. =)

1. if u're only gaming the quad core Intel is better than the 8 core AMD hands down
2. OCable means overclockable
3. the PSU is overkill, i know, i added it so that u won't need to replace it if u wanna SLI in the future
4. assembling is actually very easy, u can find a lot of good guides on youtube

Ah ok, and thank you. And hmm will have to keep that in mind with youtube and assembly.

Again much appreciated =)

PS: double thanks for checking out Canadian suppliers too. That was pretty cool of you.

Almost missed this one among the back and forth and sweet, well unless I swap builds entirely, I'll definitely go with the Corsair 600w. Though Jin has me half thinking...no I'm not convinced...that I could potentially put the thing together myself. One day maybe, not sure it will be this round. But in any case, likewise your help is much appreciated =)
