CPU socket compatibility?

Hey everyone!

I am creating a tutorial on how to build a PC, after many requests from friends and family, and just need a little help getting some CPU socket info together.

Obvuiosly, everyone knows that the CPU socket type has to be compatable with the mobo socket type, but there are occasions where CPU's are backwards compatable, such as AM3+ CPU's fitting into an AM3 socket. What I need is a complete list of all such occurences, as I do not personally know every combination. If someone who ahs detailed knowledge of this could felp, or point me in the direction of a suitable site that answers the question, I would greatly appreciate it!

I am not someone who leavs a thread after getting the answer they need, I will be selecting a best answer first!

Thanks in advance everyone! :)

Afaik this is only an AMD deal, I dont remember the last intel socket that was compatible with anything but that single socket. There were obviously generational upgrades that kept the same socket and different cpu architecture sandy/ivy bridge but that is it afaik. Also with AMD it seems that AM3 cpus support ddr2 so essentially with a bios update an AM2/2+ board would work with an AM3 cpu, though AM2/2+ cpus will NOT work on an AM3 platform.

Thanks to both of you!

I ahve already taken a look at the wiki pages with regards to CPU sockets, but there is no information there regarding my qusetion.

@ maxiim - I thought it was AMD only to be honest, I have never heard of intel being backwards/forwards compatible with any of thier CPU's. What I really need is a list of all such CPU's from AMD, such as AM2(+) and AM3(+) CPU compatibility. I would research all this myself but unforunately I have a whole heap of things on my plate at the minute! XD

Thanks for both of your help anyway!
