FPS drop problem

Hi everybody, i'm a new user on this forum and i come from the italian one. I'm having a problem with my pc while gaming that i can't solve, while i play League of Legends i usually have stable 60 FPS but after a while i randomly drops down to 5-6 FPS for a bunch of seconds then goes back to 60 (it does it at low and high graphic). I noticed with Core Temp that the CPU never goes over 55° of temperature (i just installed a CM 412S thinking it was a heat problem because in the past i had something similar that i solved installing some case fans) but when the fps drop both CPU cores go at 100% load. I really don't have an idea on what is causing this.

My PC is a pre assembled Olidata that is mounting:
Asus m2n-vm/s motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 x2 x6000+ CPU
NVIDIA gt 630 VGA (i had a Radeon HD x1600 or 1650 befor but i changed it like 1 month ago)
2x2GB kingston DDR2 Ram
Mounting a Coolermaster 412 S Dissipator
400 W power supply
mounting 2 extra 120 fans, one in the fron as intake and one on the rear as exhaust

Thanks for the help :)

Hi,

To me it seems that the CPU is causing the issue, as you stated that the FPS drop when CPU load hits 100%. However, it could be something else (bad or outdated drivers).

Here are some things you can try:

  • ■ Download latest drivers for your GPU and other components if possible
    ■ Close all applications you aren't using
    ■ Tweak Windows visual settings

i tryed 2 thing meanwhile, i changed the game priority on task manager to real time and the fps drop went from 5 to 13-15 while the audio was becoming buggy during the drop. I tryed to install a gamebooster to close all background unused application but the problem still showed

Hi,

Setting the priority in the task manager can cause lock-ups and adverse performance (with other applications), and so it is not a long term solution, and I wouldn't advise doing this.

Gamebooster is a good application if you're running on a low spec system, and in the past I found it came in handy, but in your case it doesn't seem to help.

Does this issue occur in other games, or just LoL?

It occur even on WoW. I only did the taskmanager priority once to see if something changed. I was wondering if the CPU is doing a bottlneck to the new vga causing this problem

Hi,

Your system components seem to be quite old. You're still using DDR2. But I don't imagine this causing a bottleneck as the GT 630 isn't exactly really powerful.

Update the drivers for your GT 630 (try Beta drivers if available) and see if it helps. If not, post back here.

Hi,

Did you re-install because of poor performance? Or weren't you experiencing poor performance before the re-install?

Hi,

Having not experienced this issue before, it's rather difficult for me to advise.

I would say it's possible that the CPU may be struggling. It's only a Dual-Core. Most modern CPUs are either Dual-Core with Hyper-Threading (2 Cores/4 Threads) or Quad-Core or better.

When you had your old GPU, did you experience similar problems?

Hi,

It doesn't appear to be a heat issue to me.

Does playing at lower resolutions lower the load on the CPU?

ok, i lowered all the setting at minimum, i turned of wait for v sync (don't know if it's better or not). I still get drops but i don't go at 5 fps but stop around 10-13.

Hi,

V-Sync is used to limit frames to prevent image tearing (if you need to know).

When lowering the resolution did you see high CPU usage still, or didn't you make note of it?

ok for some strange reason this game the problem didn't show up... I started lowering everything and turning the v sync off. After a while of not seeing ant fps drop i started to turn everything back on and the problem still didn't show up.

Hi,

Would you describe the problem as being intermittent or did it always occur before adjusting the settings?

Hi,

If you believe the problem is no longer occurring, play around a bit to confirm. A problem doesn't normally just go away.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. I wasn't aware you had replied.

I'm not sure how you can resolve this.

Thinking about it, I did have a similar problem a few years ago with a Pentium 4. It would stutter when the CPU hit 100% usage for a few seconds until the usage dropped again. I know it's a Single-Core CPU, but it's the only thing I can think of.

Download HWiNFO and monitor the CPU clocks, temperature and usage. Try and find out the trigger points for the bad performance, and try to replicate them several times.

ok thank you, i will try it and let you know the results. Could it be possible that the cpu is becoming too old and about to break? Cause this pc has about 4 years

Hi,

The CPU is certainly getting old now, but I wouldn't say it's going to break down.
