I have only CAT6 in my new home. I have a VOIP adapter on my network with a RJ11 port for connecting to a phone. I need to first run it over a CAT6 cable to another room going through my patchpanel. Is there a simple soltuion to go from RJ11 to RJ45 and back again at the other end of the CAT6 run? Adapter or cable? Will this work? No data on this line, just the phone. Thanks

There are some risks plugging RJ11 into RJ45. Specifically, if you plug an RJ11 jack that is actually wired to the public telephone system into a device like a network switch or network adapter. When the phone rings, you'll be sending like 25V to that network device, which may not be able to take it. But as long as you're careful and only plug phones into your RJ45 jacks that are wired to your VOIP adapter, all will be just fine. It can be a bit difficult to unplug the RJ11 cables from and RJ45 socket, but as long as you're careful you won't have any problems.

If you are really worried about it though, you can make cable with the two different ends, but I wouldn't bother.

I have read you should not use RJ11 in a RJ45 port as it could damage it!
