Can't Push Motherboard 24-pin Power Cable In All the Way

I am in the final stages of a PC build, and am plugging in all the wires. When I plug in the 24-pin ATX power cable though, I cannot push it in all the way. The pins from the motherboard socket end up partially inside the cable connector, but they are not flush (I can see a few millimeters of the pins between them), and the plastic latch on the side of the cable connector cannot engage (it is not pushed in far enough). Everything should be aligned properly. I've tried pushing pretty hard, even temporarily inserting pieces of foam underneath the motherboard to avoid flex.
As I'm writing this, the cable connector is just sitting on top of the motherboard socket. Any suggestions would be very appreciated (I don't want to use excessive force, for fear of damaging the motherboard).

Thanks for your help in advance.

i know its an old question but making new one is not worth it for this small question!

What if it breaks?(the mobo) how durable are they?
