Hey guys... Long story short after coming home from work about a year ago my brother told me one of my ram sticks stopped working... since he knows a little about computers i took his word and didn't do much testing.... just put my ram in and saw it only registering 4gb in stead of 8gb so i assume he was correct.

So today I decided to really see what the problem was (dont ask why i took so long...) and it turns out 3 of my ram slots arent working...

I've came to this conclusion because both 4gb ram sticks work in slot B2.. My pc turns on but there is no beeps or display IF there's no ram in slot B2 but ram in either A1, A2 or B1 so obviously this tells me A1, A2, and B1 are faulty... PC will boot up (only using 4gb in B2) if there's ram in B2 and any other slot.

I hope that's not confusing - Sorry if it is.

So.. What I want to find out is if my motherboard really is damaged and if there's other ways to test for this since I really don't have any cash to buy a new motherboard and i need the extra ram soon. (I know I can buy an 8gb stick but I still need to know)

Didn't fit B2 on but this shows you what A1,A2,B1,B2 are and their order if it helps at all...

Solution
Without having hands on, can't say with absolute certainy, but sure sounds like mobo, could see if you can pop the sticks into a friends rig, or borrow their sticks and try in yours

Sounds like mobo, but could well be CPU, might want to pull the CPU and look for thermal compound on bottom or in socket and in particular take a close look for bent/broken pins on CPU....Just to test and be sure not the sticks can try them in a different rig...

Thanks but my pc works perfect when just B2 is occupied with 4gb so it couldn't be a CPU problem could it?

MC (memory controller) is in the CPU if there's a bent broken pin it could be the one that carries the DRAM info back and forth between slots........as I said "Sounds like mobo" but........makes sense to check all possibles.....wouldn't be happy to buy new mobo and find same exact problem

Sorry for taking so long to reply... Been so busy! Anyway... Just decided to give the inside of my PC a nice clean with some compressed air even did my CPU socket and pins after checking for thermal compound and dust etc...

Didn't find anything in the socket or on the cpu but decided to whack my extra ram in just in case... My BIOS still only sees 4gb and so does windows. :( any idea?

small bump - tried looking into the bios and it doesn't seem its a bios issue either... Does anyone know how I can be sure replacing my mobo will work? Both ram slots work perfect in the same slot but refuse to work in others - Im really short on money and i ned to be 101% sure replacing my mobo will work

Thanks for the reply. I'll hold up for now then since I can't test the ram or get ahold of other ram any time soon... I'll be building a second rig in a few months and I can test it with that. Appreciate the help and I'll post the problem and/or solution when its sorted. Thanks :)
