I have a ssd drive, so my 16gb usb drive cannot be used as a readyboost anymore. I have 8gb of ram. I wonder if it's even worth trying to use the usb drive as a pagefile (virtual memory)?

Absolutely, positively, but not beyond the shadow of a doubt "no."

If your machine is a desktop, put the swapfile on your HDD or, if you are brave, SSD.
If your machine is a notebook, put the swapfile on your SSD.

The USB drive will be slow compared to even a mechanical hard drive and slow you down. I haven't even seen a USB 3.0 stick that will run that fast. Not yet, anyway. And it's the random writes, not the serial ones, that will count.
