Will the Phenom II X4 965 bottleneck with a 760?

I have an overclocked Phenom II X4 965 running stable at 3.9 Ghz. I have been considering getting a new GPU for a while and I have decided on the GTX 760. I understand that at stock speeds it would be very severe, but with a 500 Mhz increase, would I be fine? Thanks!

Ok, in games like that, there should be little to no bottlenecking. The only one that would bottleneck is likely WoW. But it wouldn't be unplayable by any means, so the 760 would be a pretty good upgrade in your case.

It would likely bottleneck in games that require CPU work. BF3, PS2, and anything that really requires there to be multiple other enemy players on screen, or a complex physics engine will be bottlenecked. Now, if you had it running at say, 4.5Ghz, the bottleneck would be alleviated significantly.

Ahh, 4.5 Ghz will be very challenging. I'm sure I can achieve it with some decent tweaking though. I do have a mobo that support FX chips, but I want to see what I can do with what I have for now.

It doesn't have to be 4.5, that was just an example. And an upgrade over your current processor would not really be justified, as it is still very good, and any bottlenecking that would occur would likely be fixable with a bit of graphics tweaking. What kind of games do you plan on playing, or play currently?

Sorry for the late reply. I mostly play Assassins Creed 3, WoW, L4D2, numerous RTS games, and Hitman Absolution. Im a HUGE fan of the entire Hitman series btw. I average around 45-60 frames on my Sapphire 7750 on medium.

I own a Phenom II 955 and a MSI GTX 760 OC and a 1080p 60Hz display
Most game work fine (60+fps)
Starcraft 2 HoTS all max out 20-60
Planet Side 2 all max out 30-60
MassEffect 3 all max out 60+
Skyrim all max out 50-60
Crysis 3 on High and HR textures 60+
Left 4 Dead all max out 50-60
COD MW3 max out 35-45 (lock)
BF4 max out 45-60
Alien vs Predator 2010 max out 60+
Assasin Creed 3 all max out 60+
3Mark11 - overall 6767 points, gpu: 8700 points
3dmark06 - 18500 points

If you play CPU intense titles a lot you better upgrade, but if you are casual then no need to upgrade.

You're going to hit a CPU bottleneck in Assassin's Creed 3 because it is a crappy port, Hitman Absolution in areas with large crowds is also very CPU intensive. RTSes also tend to be CPU heavy. You'll also likely get CPU bound in WoW in larger raids. You may want to consider moving to a new CPU/motherboard at some point in the near future, but it isn't strictly necessary, a 760 will still offer a significant improvement over a 7750 with your system.
