i disagree with the last part because i had a 6870 with a minidisplay port and i used mini display to mini display. but the gtx has no mini display. also the mid 2010 imac 27" has a mini display thunderbolt wasnt invented at the time

Hmm...
Reading through that page it does say at the end that

Converters not made by Apple may provide options to convert other electrical, video, and audio protocols to Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt compliant signals.

Which is I assume them begrudgingly saying that it is possible to exit the Apple Ecosystem there.

Do you have any other displays hooked up to your card, namely another two monitors using the HDMI/DVI ports? If you do, did you also have them hooked up when you were using the 6870?

In that case I dont know why it isn't working, I can only assume the cable is bust.

Try finding just a plain Mini-DP to DP adapter, then using the cable you already have.
Though looking at Newegg, it seems as if finding an adapter that simple is going to be impossible, everyone likes to convert it into HDMI or DVI instead, which isn't what you want.

Edit: Then as soon as I say that I find this.
