I just installed a MSI GTX 770 into my computer with and AMD FX 4100. I know it a bottleneck but I'm running games like Chivalry on 29 fps, Planetside 2 on 16 fps and BF3 on 30-40 fps on on the best settings should it be this bad?

Yes that's a severe bottleneck.

What is your CPU usage while playing these games? If it's near maximum most of the time then you have a severe CPU bottleneck.

Lower display resolutions tend to reveal weaknesses in CPU processing power. Weaker CPUs cannot keep the graphics card(s) fed with data quickly enough so the FPS drops.

AMD FX-8350 if it fits within your budget. It requires that you have motherboard BIOS version F3 installed before you change the CPU.
