Question on Upgrading Ram

Hi Guys,

I currently have an Acer Aspire S3 with Intel® Core™ i5-2467M Processor and 4GB of ram. I am looking to add another 4GB RAM Slot to my machine & would appreciate if someone could help with my questions:

Currently my RAM is always a 75% - 85% usage while the processor is usually in the 20% range. I have lots of excel files and chrome tabs opened simultaneously and am not happy with the laptos speed. Would an additional 4GB Ram boost performance in this case?

Also, the description page on INTEL for this processor shows "Maximum Memory Size" 8GB: does this mean, there is no way way to use any more than 8GB Ram with this processor?

Finally the memory type shown in the processor page is DDR3-1066/1333, does this mean I can use either 1066 or 1333. I believe, I need to keep this consistent with the current ram, so i wonder, if there is a way to find out how much MHZ my current ram is? (I am on Win 8).

Thanks

Not quite sure of that but I know that your laptop does not support more than 4 GB -

http://www.acer.co.in/ac/en/IN/content/model-datasheet/NX.M1FSI.001

It depends on your current memory frequency (Those details are not listed anywhere but in your laptop manual and on RAM sticks in your laptop). If it is 1066 MHz then 1066 would work perfectly but 1333 would get dropped to 1066 and would function at those speeds. If your current memory is 1333 MHz then it would work perfectly with 1333 MHz RAM sticks but would get dropped to 1066 MHz if you buy lower frequency sticks.

I just had a look at your laptop and more than 4 GB is not supported by your motherboard. If it does not support more than that then processor support would not...
1) Yes that would definitely boost PC speeds.

2) Memory size is not limited by CPU but by motherboard. See if you have spare RAM slot, if yes then you have to buy 4 GB module and put it in there. If not then you have to take the 4 GB RAM module and replace that with 8 GB RAM module.

3) 1066 and 1333 MHz are supported RAM speeds for your laptop. If you would go any higher than this then speeds would get scaled down automatically.

I would advise you to get 1333 MHz RAM module and insert it. It should be perfectly compatible.

Hi,

Thanks for the very helpful reply. I would really appreciate if you could help me with the following queries:

That is interesting. In that case, what is the best way to find out what is the maximum memory size supported by the motherboard. CPUID tells me, I have "Acer Aspire S3 with Intel Sandybridge Chipset Rev 09". Also, if processor doesnt effect the max memory, what does "Max. Memory Size" mean on the Intel page for this processors description?

Can I simply pick either 1333 or 1066 or is it important that the new ram is the same Mhz as my existing one, so they are compatible? If latter, how can I find out if my current ram is 1333 or 1066, because CPUID tells me "DRAM Frequency" is 665.3, which cant be right if the supported Mhz is 1066 and 1333?

Thanks a ton.

I just had a look at your laptop and more than 4 GB is not supported by your motherboard. If it does not support more than that then processor support would not matter. It is already filled to its very max and has no room for improvement in the field of memory -

See Data Sheet of all three models (Or possibly your model) to confirm that.

Thanks. I just did a memory scan at Crucial and you are correct, it does seem that the motherboard doesnt support more than 4GB. Any alther alternatives at all for boosting speed without buying a new laptop?

Thanks for all the help.
