I intend to buy a new 1TB hdd for use as a stand alone drive and found the RE4 which costs $17 more than the Blue. I want the RE4 for its reliability, however I heard some confusing information about using this as a single drive. Some say it is designed for raid arrays and has TLER which prevents it from deep error recovering, and it is also not suitable for being turned on and off many times on desktop computers. Some say it can be used just fine.

So what is true? Is it safe to use this RE4, or should I just buy the Blue (the Blue on the other hand may have faster read/write speeds, as some reported)?

Solution
the blue drive would be fine in terms of reliability, the reliability enhancements of the raid drive are purely for situations where the drive is in a raid array and do not benefit a single drive scenario.
