hi,
i have an acer aspire 5315 2gb ram, 80 gb hdd, recently i wasn't able to select boot option in the boot menu and so i got the advise to de-fragment the hdd, it worked for some time but now it just wont start, when i press the power-up button the cpu indicator light and cd-dvd tray light keeps going on and off like Christmas lights....and nothing just blank lcd screen..

does this cpu light blinking thing happen when the ram is gone bad?

this is my lucky laptop....can someone please show me how to fix this??

many thanks
any help will do

Ok well it seems like you may have a more serious power/motherboard issue.

Just out of interest have you tried booting the machine without the psu plugged in? Could possible be a faulty power supply?

If not I think it could be the power switch board that is replacable or a motherboard issue and realistically if its mobo then you are better off picking up a new laptop and selling yours for parts.

Sorry, this probably isn't what u wanted to hear :(
Try unplugging it and removing the battery, plug in with battery out and try.

Does the drive make any clicking noises when its trying to start up?

You need to start removing parts piece by piece to see if one is causing the problem but I'm not sure how happy you are to try this?

hi,
i tried this removed the battery and started the laptop with power supply only, there's no clicking sound in hdd [laptop still does the Christmas lights thingy], then i removed the hdd and started the laptop with the power supply no battery it still does the Christmas lights thingy,,,,
[laptop cpu light and cd-dvd light keeps going on and off]

so i removed the laptop hdd and put the laptop hdd to a sata enclosure and connected it to my desktop pc and the laptop hard disk works fine...it shows up as h:/ drive and i can browse the folders

maybe its the ram or cmos battery?

I doubt its the cmos battery.

Try removing the dvd drive and if you can get to the ram remove and clean the contacts and blow out the slots.

If you have 2 sticks of ram try one at a time.

Have you tried plugging the laptop into an external monitor?

Can you access the bios

hi,
i tried removing the ram and cleaning the sockets and putting them back in place ----WITH---- the hdd [this gives the same Christmas lights effect] laptop cpu and cd-dvd drive lights keeps blinking

i tried removing the ram and cleaning the sockets and putting them back in place ----WITHOUT---- the hdd [this gives the same Christmas lights effect] laptop cpu and cd-dvd drive lights keep blinking

i had removed the cd-dvd drive and powering up the laptop with the ram and hdd installed this gives blinking laptop ----cpu lights only---.

i tried removing the cd-dvd drive and hdd this gives ---------no blinking lights----------

and also tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor [this also gives the same Christmas lights effect] and blank screen on external monitor and laptop lcd...[no blinking cursor or bios]

i cannot access the bios under any of the above circumstances...

many thanks
