unable to ping wireless gateway

I have a basic network setup for home, 1 beetel wifi modem provided by SP.
I use wifi to connect through internet, when i connect my laptop internet keeps dropping for every couple of seconds. my laptop isnt pinging wifi gateway (request timed out) though its still connected to modem. and it gets reply for couple of secs only.
I also connect my mobile through wifi it works perfect.
Is there any problem with wifi adaptor? do i need to upgrade?
I have tried to configure statically but no joy. Please help.

Agreed, if all other devices are working fine wirelessly, and you experience the same connectivity issues on other hotspots, it is more than likely the PC/Adapter that is giving you issue. Sounds like you got a touchy adapter that is dropping signals at -70 RSSI, which I have seen, most adapters won't drop until around -80 RSSI.

Switching from wireless to wired ethernet is a whole different story and not really accurate for testing the connectivity as each adapter can have different settings and virtualization in the operating system.
For example when you plugged into the router, your PC should have prompted you for the kind of network you were joining (windows 7, windows 8 they removed this and it is determined when you enable...

Most routers have built in firewalls that by default are set to drop/ignore ping requests some even do so from the internal network.
You will likely see a ping response as the router is initializing after which the firewall will turn on and deny all other requests.

Be sure to check the lights on the modem to ensure the LEDs are blinking in the affirmative for connectivity.

I would call the ISP to troubleshoot the issue, any number of issues may have occurred. Static on the line, modem hit by lightning, etc, etc. If anything they can test the signal strength to the router and tell you if there is any issues and send a service tech out to fix the issue.

Let me first thankyou for responding to my query. I really appreciate your efforts.
I am afraid it din't work, have tried reinstalling drivers but its still the same., and I also did check the antenna thing but nothing is hanging out, although I haven't opened my laptop as I'm scared to death.
One thing to bring u in notice that when I boot up my laptop for the first time its working awesome but later after sometime let us say may be untill 10 mins problem starts again.
my signal vary from fair-good. When I sit just beside my router it works fine only when i move away for just 10 feets it starts giving problems.
I have also tried to contact my SP but to be honest they do nothing, as all other devices works fine, including my cell phone.

Lights on the modem does blinks but only when I browse/download anything on internet., Otherwise its just constant as if there is no traffic flow.

I guess its the same with other wifi with good-fair signal because when I go to my friends place sometime at weekends it does the same. And my laptop is just 4 months old.
Make/model : ASUS K55V,
wifi adapter : Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter

Do you really think its my wifi adaptor?
then i would order the one which u advised. Lets see if it helps...

Yes it does work absolutely fine on ethernet connection, like I mentioned earlier. It also works fine when I sit just next to modem. Only happens when signal ranges from good - fair or 10 feet away from the modem.

Just tells us the router isn't having issues communicating with the modem which is what I believe boosted1g was identifying.


It's also possible that the antennas inside the laptop around the LCD are pinched or disconnected from the adapter, since it is only 4 mos old, you could RMA the laptop.
